Hi my name is Bryan. I have been working part time as a support worker with Enabling Independence for 3 years. I have a 27 year old son called Jonathan who has Down Syndrome and is a client of Enabling Independence. My role with Enabling Independence is to primarily support the older male clients.

I have a son Jonathan who has Down Syndrome. Parenting Jonathan has been a challenge for me and has given me cause to think more deeply about the needs and wants of people who live with disabilities of various kinds. I have appreciated the opportunity to be employed as a support worker for people who have disabilities.
I have special empathy for vulnerable people in our society, who are unable to have the opportunities and experiences that other people (such as myself) are privileged to have. In particular, I feel suited to supporting older males with their needs.
I have a background in Christian Ministry, pastoral care and counselling and in line with this I feel drawn to work in the area of the caring professions. I have a sense of humour, patience, experience in working with people who have mental health struggles, and also a desire to see people grow to be more independent in accordance with their capacity to do so. It is always a joy to see someone participate in, and achieve in, an activity, that is meaningful to them.
My hobbies are very varied… football, cricket, golf, gardening, reading, travelling, chess, op shops and community events.
